The Shared Journey

Carriers of Grace

Dear TSJ Friends, Yesterday morning I was reading an interesting book written by James Martin, SJ about his pilgrimage to the holy land a few years ago.  And I came across a statement that I thought worthy of our attention today. It certainly caught my attention. Perhaps that in itself is a sign of something I am to learn!  “Be careful not to overlook anyone as an instrument of grace.” Here is a bit of the context that this came from. It follows a discussion on how Jesus’ “tight knit village knew him so well that they couldn’t imagine someone

When You Stumble . . .

Dear Patient and Faithful TSJ Fans and Readers, Only kind thoughts have silently been sent out to all TSJ readers from Solomon and me. So after a long span of time when I have been publicly silent, I am actually excited to be writing again. And I am coming back with renewed passion for the theme of “shared journeys.” Our TSJ wisdom whisperer, Solomon, has nudged me repeatedly to share with you some thoughts today. More than ever, I am believing that we learn from one another and we need one another. We also can and must encourage each other.

You Can’t Touch The Wind

Happy Wednesday Dear TSJ Peeps! “The Boys” and I are wondering. Are you are enjoying summer days? Or do you sometimes ask yourself,  “What ever happened to what the old song called  ‘the lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer?” I have found it easy to cram so many “things” into my days they slip by without me even noticing the present moment. By “things” I mean objects of our attention that may be good, fun, entertaining, even necessary but can easily distract us from the richness of life in the moment. And each moment is pregnant with possibility to access a gold mine of wisdom, comfort,

A Message to Mom

Hello TSJ peeps!  Happy WW day! “Sir Solomon” and little SJ are in their WW spots.  Yes, Tom remembered today is their day to get some attention and to remind us all to live wisely and playfully as much as possible. Especially on Mother’s Day weekend! Since today is my mother’s birthday and Sunday is Mother’s Day, I thought our WW could be a mom type reflection. The only way to write about mom is to be personal.  Moms, after all, are just as different from one another as we are.  We do not all have “Hallmark” stories!  Many

Beyond Words

” Faith makes things possible….not easy.” This saying on our mantle has come alive of late! When your heart breaks for your children, how do you put that into words?   There simply are no words sufficient for this task. When you feel deep stirrings in your soul for the conditions of our world, both locally and beyond, how do you describe the angst and worry it creates?   There are no words for the depth and complexity of the human condition that creates so much turmoil. When you are confronted with so many tough and often daily challenges that render you feeling

New Year- New Look- Old Truths

Happy New Year and Welcome to my updated website! My friend, Lucille, has made this new look possible. She is far more more technologically inclined than I and has been gently nudging me to finish up the writing so she can put the last minute touches on the design. And she has the patience of Job. For that I am deeply grateful and even more humbled that she will partner with me in 2014 and free me from unnecessary frustration! Isn’t it a wonderful truth that each day provides opportunities for improvement and renewal within the inner sanctuary of our

Wisdom Part II ~ Discernment vs Good Judgment?

Who comes to your mind when you think of a wise person? How would you describe that person? How is wisdom different from knowledge or expertise? How can we be wise parents? Last week I was pondering the question of wisdom here.  I write about it because I really believe that we parents must seek wisdom. Parent shepherding, after all,  is both complex and ambiguous in its demands. There is no one way that works anymore than wool coats work for swimming or a sand pail works for a flood! Wisdom helps us discern what is effective and what is

Wisdom = Experience, Knowledge, and Good Judgment

One day my husband and I were with my sister’s family and on our way to an event (which eludes my memory).  We were riding together and running a bit late but still needed to pick up something at a store.  Tom and I waited in the car while they completed their errand. Getting back into the car became complicated. Our little three year old niece was giving her daddy a tough time when he tried to buckle her into her car seat.  Her mom was finishing up in the store and her dad was moving things along as he brought

What We Remember~ A Mother’s Day Reflection

What Will Our Kids Remember?   This next weekend is Mother’s Day. And I don’t know if it is just me, but I have very mixed emotions about Mother’s Day.  More on that in a minute. Yesterday was my mom’s birthday and Sunday was dad’s.  Although they have been gone several years, this week always calls them to mind. Having a birthday close to Mother’s Day was seemingly good for my mother as she was always happiest at those times and as the old saying goes, “when mama was happy…we were.” Truthfully, she reveled in such events. So I have

Why Do Eyes and Feet Face Forward?

I know this is a simple and perhaps even silly sounding blog today.  (Feet and eyes face forward, duh!)  But right now, I am okay with that.     I am feeling so tired of all of the political negativity we hear every day as we face our election that I just want to challenge us to choose our own thoughts wisely.  They direct our words and our actions. We all know that, but oh how we need reminders. But how, I wonder, do we ever teach our children not to be demeaning, belittling bullies
