Time-Out for Solomon

Greetings to TSJ Friends, Solomon has asked for a time-out today. He has been working overtime lately and being filled with compassion for all the things that humans have to experience in the pastures of their daily lives, he thought a time-out would be good for him. He pleaded his case by reminding me that since many schools are closed and most teachers are having a little “time-out too” just maybe he could remind us that learning to take time out can actually be a time for gathering wisdom.  He pointed out that we often force time-outs on children so

Broken Open

(Remember to click on green header for easier reading on your phone) Greetings to Our TSJ Friends, Our adorable and wise old sheep who serves as my muse and TSJ’s mascot (aka-Solomon), joins me to wish you a happy Wednesday (even if late in the day). Perhaps he wanted to be in the greeting because he is worried you will like the sheep in the picture and forget him.  But no . . .  he is too wise for that.  He says humans worry way too much about being the best or most special because they do not really understand

“Get Out of Your Head!”

(Remember to click on the green header for easier reading on your phone.) Happy Wednesday! I often use this cup that has been broken and repaired as a reminder of spiritual truths. In years past I have referred to the “Sip it and zip it” attitude that comes with quiet time with Chief Shepherd. It also reminds us to “Savor each moment.” Some moments are meant to be savored.  Maybe if we become highly enlightened we would actually learn to savor even the unfavorable moments in our lives.  Sometimes I can do that by seeing lessons in those moments.  But

Simple Reflections

Dear TSJ Readers,  (Remember to click on the green header to read this much more easily on you mobil phones.) Today I feel the impulse to be reflective.  There are so many things clamoring for our time and attention that it is hard to think. It is hard to pause. To reflect. To know what to do next. I often long for more serenity. My computer dictionary defines serenity: the state of being calm, peaceful, and untroubled: an oasis of serenity amidst the bustling city.   Wouldn’t we TSJ folks like to be an oasis of serenity for each other

Would You Be an Elbow?

(Remember to click on the green header to bring up an easier-to-read format on your mobile devices.) Dear TSJ Friends, Today I am indulging a fantasy. What if we were given a choice to be a certain body part in order to create a whole human being? What part would you choose to be?  For example, would you be an elbow or a mouth?  An ear? Why? Sometimes my old brain does funny things such as musing about common topics in odd ways.  I know. I recognize it in myself.  I hope it will at least amuse you a little and

Aches and Pains of Life

Dear TSJ Friends, I have been thinking a lot about aches and pains lately. That includes heart aches and physical pain and challenges.  It has something to do with being in my seventies, I think. What about you? Do you ever wish you could stay in bed all day or sprawl on the couch with a cozy blanket, and a good book or movie or video game? No cooking, no cleaning, no transporting the kids, no laundry, no company presentation or running your business or grading student work? Do you have fantasies of escape? Do you feel like the demands

Let’s Start With A Smile

(Remember to click on the green header for easier reading on your mobile devices) Happy New Year to our TSJ Friends! It has occurred to me – that if you think about it – we could greet each other all the time with a greeting such as “happy new minute!” And be just as accurate. Because the wish is really a wish for people to experience the power of hope in new beginnings. Of course using a year is a manageable unit in marking time, especially since we use it in businesses, school years and birthdays!  It is rather fun

“You Cannot Clench Your Teeth and Yawn”

(Gentle reminder for the readers who are not into technology – be sure to tap on the green heading for easier reading on your mobile devices!) Dear TSJ Friends, In this busy holiday season when many of us are feeling a mixture of excitement and stress I want to share some ideas on how to reduce stress. I hope this blog-letter will be encouraging, enjoyable and useful. To start with, have you ever thought much about the gift of yawning? The other day a good friend and I spent some treasured time together. It was rather serendipitous and delightful. We started

Shepherding Our Children and Shaping Their Values

(Remember to click on the green header for easier reading on mobile devices.) Greetings TSJ Friends, I am amazed with life.  It can seem to flow so beautifully one moment and feel so topsy turvy the next.  Can you relate? So I confess writing this blog today has been challenging.  I ran into  technical troubles and frustration updating the picture of the fireplace project   and share some Wednesday reflections from  Solomon. And my patience wore so thin I almost gave up. But instead I decided to practice what I preach –  share the journey — remembering that learning and
